Buying a new home is exciting—but showing up on move-in day to a house without electricity or running water? Not so much. That’s why transferring the utilities into your name is a crucial part of the home-buying process.

Here’s what you need to know to keep your move smooth and stress-free.

Why You Need to Act Early As nice as it would be for the previous owner to keep the lights on for you, that’s not going to happen. In fact, they’re legally required to notify their utility providers that they’re moving—and those services may be shut off right after closing if you haven’t taken action.

When to Call About a week before closing, contact all utility companies that service the property. This includes electric, water, gas, trash, internet, and possibly propane or septic services, depending on the area. Let them know you're the incoming owner and request service to begin on your closing date.

Don’t Forget Your Mailing Address In many areas we serve, local mail delivery isn’t available. When setting up your accounts, provide a reliable mailing address—either your current home address or a local PO Box—so your utility bills don’t go missing (and unpaid).
